Najac has a large open air swimming pool which is open from late June to early September. There are also indoor pools with an extensive range of aqua facilities, in Villefranche and Albi.
The beautiful river Viaur, reputed to be the cleanest
in France, has excellent spots for swimming, and lovely walks along its
leafy banks. Rock climbing
facilities are also available.
The Aveyron has a variety of activities along its banks; canoeing, a dedicated
kayaking course, walking, mountain biking, horse riding and a tree adventure
park. The National hiking trail GR36 winds its way along the Aveyron from
Laquépie to Villefranche de Rouergue.
The countryside around Najac has very little traffic, which makes rambling
a joy and to discover the abundance of wild orchids, meadow flowers and
bird life.
In the summer the majority of the villages in the area have local festivals.
In Najac, in August, there is the “Festival en Bastides” in
the first week and the “Festival of St. Barthélémy” over
the third weekend, when a giant Fouace, a form of dry cake, is paraded
through the streets.
Cordes-sur-Ciel have a medieval pageant every year on
July 13th and 14th, Bastille Day, and later in the month, a series of
jousting tournaments.
Numerous music and art festivals take place in the four departments that
encircle Najac, the Aveyron, Tarn, Tarn et Garonne and Lot, throughout
the summer months.
The cathedral cities of Albi, Cahors, Montauban
and Rodez with their wide variety of shopping facilities and
tourist sights, are all with an hour’s drive from Najac.
The market towns of Villefranche de Rouergue, St Antonin
Noble Val (where the
film “Charlotte Grey” was shot) and Cordes-sur-Ciel are again within
easy reach as are the Domains of the AOC vineyards of Gaillac, Cahors and Marcillac,
and the Aveyron Bastide towns of Sauveterre de Rouergue, Belcastel, and Villeneuve.
